The Finnish Kennel Club cancels all canine events in Finland

The Board of the Finnish Kennel Club decided on 12th March 2020 on measures aiming to stop the spreading of coronavirus, COVID-19. All dog shows, trials, and competitions as well as other events organised by the Finnish Kennel Club are cancelled until 31st May 2020. Visits made by care dogs and reading dogs are cancelled until 31st July 2020.

Under the Hunting Act, the period for keeping dogs on leashes begins on Friday 1 March 2024.

The Finnish Hunting Act states that dogs must be kept on a leash all across Finland starting on Friday 1 March. According to the law, dogs must be kept leashed from the beginning of March until 19 August. The leashing period applies to areas outside urban areas. Dogs must always be leashed in urban areas according to the Public Order Act.

The upcoming EU regulation will steer dog breeding in a more commercial direction, towards large kennel units

In 2023, the European Commission published a proposal for a regulation on the welfare and identification of dogs and cats, which aims to curb puppy mills, illegal dog trade and dog smuggling more effectively. The goal is good, but the means are not in line with the goals.
