The Finnish Kennel Club's vaccination regulations may differ from the vaccination requirements associated with the importing of dogs to Finland. The importing requirements in force can be checked through the EVIRA website.

Vaccination regulations

In order for the dog to be present in an event, it must have the following valid vaccinations:

  • Canine distemper vaccination. The dog has had the canine distemper vaccination at least twice and at least 21 days have passed since the administering of the booster vaccine. The first booster vaccine is valid for one year. The following booster shots, which are administered at the age of one year or older, are valid for a period determined in the summary of product characteristics for the vaccine in question.
  • Rabies vaccination. At least 21 days must have passed since the administering of the dog's first rabies vaccination. The first booster vaccine is valid for one year. The following booster shots, which are administered at the age of one year or older, are valid for a period determined in the summary of product characteristics for the vaccine in question.

The vaccination certificate must note the dog's identification information and state the last date of validity of the vaccine.

Regulations associated with infectious diseases

If a dog contracts canine distemper, infectious hepatitis, kennel cough or some other similar infectious inflammation of the respiratory system, parvo virus diarrhoea or another similar infectious inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, the dog may not be present at an event unless it has been symptom-free for at least two weeks. This same restriction also applies to symptom-free dogs belonging to the same household. Cases of external and internal parasites must be treated in the appropriate manner before the dog is allowed to be present at the event.

Renewal of expired vaccinations

If a dog's vaccination has expired, the vaccination must be renewed at least 21 days before the date of the event.

Recommendations associated with vaccinations

A recommendation for a vaccination program, of which a veterinarian is allowed to differ:

  • Canine distemper vaccination is given first time for a 12 weeks old puppy as a part of a combo including vaccination for canine distemper, infectious hepatitis, parvo virus diarrhoea and kennel cough. The booster is given 4 weeks from the first vaccination.
  • The first vaccination for rabies is given for a puppy 16 weeks old at the earliest. Canine distemper and rabies vaccinations are not recommended to be given simultaneously.

Notes about previous vaccinations are kept in a pet passport or in another vaccination certificate.

It is recommended to get a booster for kennel cough vaccination about yearly or depending on the situation before attending a show or a trial.
